They have numerous responsibilities. This field combines obstetrics—a special area of care that encompasses preconception care through childbirth and delivery—with gynaecology, which covers all areas of women’s health. They perform initial diagnoses and prescribe the best treatments possible. These include performing routine check-ups with their patients to diagnose and treating conditions that affect women, such as certain types of cancer and conditions like menopause. This is done through various physical tests, such as pelvic and breast examinations and pap smears.
They work with their expectant patients to educate and provide healthcare to navigate pregnancy, childbirth and the post-partum process.
